After Your Filling

Thank you for trusting us with your dental care! At Midway Family Dental, we follow the IAOMT SMART protocol for safe mercury amalgam removal. All new fillings placed are mercury-free, metal-free, and biocompatible composite restorations. Please follow these instructions to ensure the best healing and detox support.

While You Are Still Numb

  • Be careful not to bite, chew, scratch, or burn your lips, cheeks, or tongue.

  • Avoid eating solid foods until the numbness completely wears off (usually 2–4 hours).

  • Children and sensitive adults should be closely monitored until the numbness is gone.

Eating & Drinking

  • Once the numbness has worn off, you may eat and chew normally.

  • Composite fillings are fully hardened before you leave our office, so no special restrictions are required.

  • Begin with soft, nourishing foods if your teeth feel sensitive.

Sensitivity & Discomfort

  • It is normal to have mild sensitivity to hot, cold, or pressure for several days to a few weeks.

  • Avoid very hot, cold, or sticky foods if sensitivity occurs.

  • Natural support: Arnica (tablets or topical cream) may reduce soreness. Warm saltwater rinses can soothe gums.

  • Avoid using essential oils directly on gums or teeth without dilution.

  • If needed, over-the-counter pain relief (ibuprofen or acetaminophen) may be used as directed.

Supporting Your Body After Mercury Removal

Your body may benefit from extra support to process and eliminate mercury safely. These are general wellness suggestions; please consult your healthcare provider before starting new supplements.

Nutrition & Hydration

  • Eat a diet rich in whole foods, especially leafy greens, cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, kale, Brussels sprouts), garlic, onions, and fresh herbs like cilantro and parsley.

  • Include fiber-rich foods (chia, flax, oats, vegetables) to support elimination.

  • Drink plenty of filtered water to stay hydrated and flush toxins.

Supplements Commonly Used

  • Vitamin C – supports detox and immune function.

  • Magnesium – aids in relaxation and cellular health.

  • Zinc & Selenium – support antioxidant defense and detox pathways.

  • Activated Charcoal or Chlorella – sometimes used as binders to support mercury elimination.

  • Glutathione or NAC (N-acetylcysteine) – supports liver detoxification.

Lifestyle Support

  • Gentle movement and sweating (walking, sauna, red light therapy) help circulation and detox.

  • Prioritize rest and stress reduction — healing takes energy.

  • Avoid processed foods, refined sugar, and alcohol during the healing phase.

Caring for Your New Filling

Your filling restores the tooth, but the natural tooth structure around it can still decay if not cared for. To keep your new filling strong:

  • Brush twice daily, focusing gently at the gumline.

  • Floss once daily to clean between teeth and prevent decay around the edges of the filling.

  • Eat a diet rich in whole foods, limiting sugar and processed snacks.

  • Keep up with regular checkups and cleanings so we can monitor the health of your teeth and fillings.
